To check your hardware without a tool is very difficult and for most computer users it’s impossible. There are free hardware diagnostic tools available that can help you check RAM, Hard disks, hardware temperatures etc. If you having problems to start your computer or other problems that you suspect having to do with hardware parts and not software, it’s not only a good idea to use a hardware diagnostic tool, I think it’s actually necessary to find out what causing the problem.
List Of Free Hardware Diagnostic Tools:
HWMonitor is a free hardware monitoring program that can read the computer’s health sensors such as temperatures, voltage and fan speeds. It can read CPU’s on-die core thermal sensors, graphic cards GPU temperatures and hard drive temperatures. It supports a large number of hardware including Intel and AMD processors, Nvidia and ATI GPU’s and Asus motherboards and so on. HWMonitor is developed by CPUID and it also has a PRO version.
MemTest86 is a free memory test software for x86 architecture computers. To use MemTest86, you need to download the free ISO file and create a bootable CD, USB flash drive or floppy disk. MemTest86 works on Intel 32-bit and 64-bit computers and it’s a much better memory test tool than the BIOS based memory test. MemTest86 is owned by PassMark Software but the code is still open source.
HD Tune is a hard disk utility tool that you can use to check your hard disk health status (S.M.A.R.T.), scan for errors and to check the drive’s performance. HD Tune got a PRO version with many more features but if you want to scan your hard disk for errors and check the health status, the free version is fine. Windows got its own built in disk diagnostic tool called CHKDSK, which you can use to scan for errors. If you find a lot of errors, you should replace your hard disk as soon as possible.
Core Temp is a small software that checks the CPU temperature and gives you detailed information about your processor. Core Temp works on all Windows versions and Intel, AMD and VIA x86 based processors. This software is great if you just want to check your CPU temperature fast and without having to enter BIOS.
GPU-Z is a small software designed to give you detailed information about your video card and GPU. You don’t need any special skills to use this program, just download and run it. GPU-Z supports Windows XP, Vista and 7 both 32 and 64-bit versions. NVIDIA and ATI cards are supported.
It’s always a good thing to keep an eye on your hardware. If your CPU temperature is too hot or your hard disk has many bad sectors, knowing it before anything goes wrong will give you time to prevent any big disaster. You don’t have to be a computer technician or spend any money to check your hardware, so there’ really no excuse for not doing it. A software can be repaired, but if a hardware part is broken, it’s usually not possible for the average computer users to fix it, so check your hardware on a regular basis, it can save you from trouble later on.
